It's possible that you may have heard some rumors about the death of print media. As it turns out, they're more or less true. Not long after Al Gore invented the internet during the 2000 elections, readers began defecting from traditional print media toward internet-based alternatives. The immediacy and convenience of online publications have sucked the lifeblood -- and the ad revenue -- from traditional, more easily folded newspapers.

And, if you're looking for a company that's waist-deep in the print-periodicals business, look no further than Gannett Co. (NYSE: GCI). The Virginia-based outfit prints daily newspapers that are published around the country, spanning from USA Today to the Detroit Free Press to my own local fish-wrapper, The Cincinnati Enquirer.

What went wrong? At number 23 on our list of the S&P 500's worst 10-year laggards, GCI lost 70% of its value during the decade ended June 30, 2008. The stock peaked at $91.38 in April 2004, and its performance since then can best be described as "prolonged death throes." Sure, there were a few upbeat quarters mixed in, but the industry trend was (and is) inescapable. According to the Newspaper Association of America, circulation revenue has dropped consistently in the past five years. GCI's decline on the charts has been just as consistent; since June 2004, the stock's 10-month and 20-month moving averages have ushered the stock ever southward.

What next? The ugly fundamental outlook hasn't changed much for Gannett. Recently, the company said that its first-half earnings in 2008 were down 26% from the first half of 2007. In the second quarter, the media firm said it took an accounting write-down of $2.6 billion to $2.9 billion to reflect the company's declining market value (the exact amount will be recorded in an amended filing this August).

GCI's downtrend has proven itself more or less unstoppable during the past 14-ish years, but the shares caught a slight bounce in mid-July after tapping the $15 region. This level provided support for the equity as far back as mid-1988 and late 1990, and appears to be holding steady as a lifeline for GCI. Until the stock truly stages a rebound, though, the sidelines are a popular spot -- Zacks reports that 80% of analysts maintain a skeptical "hold" rating.

Some thoughts:

The internet is the single biggest deflationary force ever invented and the "information deflation" is in full force.

Without a doubt, my bullish bent on the newspaper names was my single worst "call" of the year.

The thesis was that portals will buy the papers to feed content into their pipes.

That remains a viable option for some of the franchise properties, although it will seemingly happen -- if it happens -- from lower levels.

I still own some GCI January calls but have quickly become lottery tickets.

In the wake of mixed results from Alcoa (NYSE: AA) and General Electric (NYSE: GE) kicking things off last week, here's a look at what Wall Street is expecting from many of the companies scheduled to report this coming week.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial are expecting the following companies to report a rise in earnings when compared to the same period of the previous year.

Analysts are looking for a number of the big financials reporting next week to post declines in earnings, but I've focused on those companies in a separate post (see Financials expected to post earnings declines, losses this week). The companies below are also expected to post declines in profit.

Continental Airlines Inc. (NYSE: CAL) is expected to swing to a loss of 52 cents (from $2.10 EPS last year) on $4.1 billion (+9.3%). And Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD) is expected to narrow its loss to 52 cents per share (from 95 cents per share last year) on sales of $1.5 billion (+5.2%).

With expectations listed out this way Wall Street seems pretty optimistic about earnings (other than for financial companies; see Financials expected to post earnings declines, losses this week). But we'll see this week whether the companies above can live up to these expectations. Do you think they will?

Yet this may actually be good for Gannett (NYSE: GCI).

That is, the company has acquired the rest of ShopLocal.com from McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) and Tribune, which recently went private. The details: Gannett snagged McClatchy's 15% stake for $7.9 million and Tribune's 42.5% position for $22.3 million.

ShopLocal calls itself as a "multi-channel shopping services" company. Essentially, the platform helps you effectively market locally, using online methods.

Gannett also owns PointRoll, which develops rich online media. Thus, by combining this with ShopLocal, it will have more interactive ad formats. It looks like the parties are already working on back-to-school campaigns. And with ShopLocal being under complete control, it should be a lot easier.

You can't even find protection in yields these days. It just went away. Perhaps we will get it if Sen. Obama gets elected. Perhaps with higher rates. Perhaps with the downfall of the high-yielding American financials. (Nice discussion of the lack of dividend safety courtesy of the man who knows more about dividends than anyone, Dave Peltier, in the Columnist Conversation last week.)

For ages, it seemed you could get to a magic number, typically 4% yield, where stocks would bounce, or at least be given a parachute that opened for a gentle landing.

Last week that parachute failed. You have stocks like Con Ed (NYSE: ED) (Cramer's Take) just getting trashed here, pushing the yield to 6%. You have stocks like Weyerhauser (NYSE: WY) (Cramer's Take), Carnival Cruise (NYSE: CCL) (Cramer's Take), Gannett (NYSE: GCI) (Cramer's Take), just slicing through the protection. The former's got cyclicality, the middle's got consumer and fuel worries, and the latter is in secular. But they all have no trouble paying the dividend.

Or consider Verizon (NYSE: VZ) (Cramer's Take) and AT&T (NYSE: T) (Cramer's Take). The first is at a 5% yield, the other is almost there. No one questions their ability to support that dividend.

I am not counting ANY of the 7-8-9-10 percenters in the financials. Anything north of 4% in that group has turned toxic.

I am saying that it is clear from these declines that something's about to give: bond yields going through the roof? A recession so severe that it threatens outfits like Con Edison? Or perhaps just a simple reversion to the old tax code, something that Obama wants that could easily be passed by a Democratic Congress.

One of these three, if not all three, is the culprit. If it is one, it might be possible to handle a decline of only about 5% from here. If it is all three, then the decline will not stop there.

Of all the things I see out there other than the collapse of almost all of the major banks, I think it is the sudden change in defense -- these stocks just don't hold up despite how much they are paying you to hold them -- that is most worrisome.

Because if these yields don't stop these stocks from going down as fast as they have been, I don't know what will!

Basically, to stabilize things, the company needs to find new growth opportunities.

And, of course, this is likely to come from the Net. So this week, Gannett announced a strategic investment in Cozi, which is a scheduler for families (the amount was not disclosed).

In the deal, Gannet will leverage Cozi's service across its large distribution platform, which includes 85 daily newspapers, 23 television stations and hundreds of websites.

Cozi is a neat service. For example, you can track shopping and to-do lists, family chores and so on. There is also calendar and photo sharing. Launched in late 2006, Cozi now has more than 600,000 registered users.

All in all, this looks like a smart deal for Gannett. Basically, the company can enhance its relationship with its customers. At the same time, Cozi could be a vehicle for local and classified ads, which are under pressure. Moreover, there is likely to be a boost in membership as Gannett has coverage of about 20 million households.

Nothing in them was surprising.

According to the country's largest newspaper company, "Publishing advertising revenues in May were 14.3 percent lower." Classified ad revenue fell even more, almost 20%. Auto, real estate, and jobs marketing have begun to leave newspapers and financial trouble within those industries has cut their ad budgets to the bone.

The most disturbing piece of new is the report was that at USA Today, advertising revenue was 18.4 percent lower on paid ad pages of 260 versus 324 last year.

USA Today is part newspaper, part daily magazine. It uses color and graphics in a way that is closer to Time, Newsweek, or BusinessWeek than to a typical daily paper. It is also a national product, not local like other papers.

If the country's largest paper, and one of only two papers distributed widely in the USA is in such trouble, it may be a sign that the print ad downturn is moving quickly from newspapers to magazines. Some weekly publications like BusinessWeek are seeing double digit ad drops.

Newspapers may not be the last part of the print publication industry to fall apart.

The shocking 10% workforce reduction announced this week by McClatchy (Cramer's Take) (NYSE: MNI), formerly the best-run chain out there, is a reminder that all of these companies have borrowed too much money and don't generate the cash flow to make it work. McClatchy, with an 8% yield, is showing signs of collapsing under its own weight, something that has been exacerbated by Wall of Shame performer Gary Pruitt, a man who is still, amazingly, the CEO.

But all of this was totally predictable. I have never seen an industry attract so many buyers with so much debt and so little equity.

Take Tribune (Cramer's Take). Sam Zell's a smart guy. He let the newspaper employees do the heavy lifting when he bought the Tribune company. That was so smart. He will be out very little if the deal fails. The workers will be out their retirement money. That was a smart deal -- unless you work there -- but I have spoken against that deal so many times I am sick of talking about it.

McClatchy could have weathered this downturn, instead of -- it is a bit unthinkable, but I think it will happen -- defaulting on its debt, if it hadn't been determined to buy a bunch of properties for much more than they are worth. The New York Times (Cramer's Take) (NYSE: NYT) and Gannett (Cramer's Take) (NYSE: GCI) spent a lot of money, but they didn't have to buy back stock. Gannett's 6% yield isn't tempting in the least.

What got into all of these guys? First, they weren't portals. Each lacked critical mass to become the destination sites on the Web. Second, it makes very little sense to advertise with them for many of the bread-and-butter advertisers: classifieds, movies, real estate. Those are all purchased better on the Web, because the interactivity has an immediate payoff. Those ads for real estate you see are almost all for older, wealthier people and are vanity projects by the brokers to keep their salespeople happy.

Finally, the younger people aren't all that interested in news. That's really the rub. News isn't that important to them. Sure, they follow the election, but for the most part news isn't of real value. They don't care that much, and if they do they go to Google (Cramer's Take) (NASDAQ: GOOG) News, which is actually better than a newspaper because the newspaper companies were never able to gate their stuff.

So you have all of these old fuddy-duddy bankers and editors and publishers missing the whole point: New potential readers don't read papers any more. They don't even care much about the news.

When you layer on the cyclical aspect of things: quickly declining auto ads and retail ads -- much less competition there, so many fewer ads -- you really get a tsunami of pain that will make it so it is possible that most newspapers will have to restructure to stay in business. Basically, offline journalism isn't a business as it is currently configured. And all of these deals made no sense whatsoever.

My prediction: Within one year, most of the levered players will eliminate dividends, close papers and fire so many people that whatever might intrigue young people will be gone.

If they weren't so indebted, this would all be less of a problem. Much less.

-----------------------------------------
RELATED LINKS:
McClatchy to Cut 10% of Staff
They Just Don't Get McClatchy!
-----------------------------------------

Jim Cramer is a director and co-founder of TheStreet.com. Ad revenue at some large chains with properties in the hard-hit economies of Florida and California are seeing their classified businesses drop by over 30% compared with last year. A number of newspaper chain stocks are down well over 50% since the middle of 2007.

The largest newspaper company in the U.S., Gannett (NYSE: GCI), is getting ready to take a $3 billion, non-cash charge to write-down the value of its assets. The charge will cover almost 20% of the firm's total assets. According to The Wall Street Journal, "The publisher of USA Today and more than 80 other daily papers, Gannett is the latest newspaper company to take an impairment charge reflecting difficult industry conditions."

Of all U.S. newspaper companies, Gannett is the most likely to weather the current storm, unless it never ends. The firm's long-term debt is $4 billion, which is modest for a company its size. Gannett's revenue last year was $7.5 billion.

Other companies in the industry may not be so lucky. Some, like McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) and Gatehouse (NYSE: GHS) have taken on substantial debt loads to buy other newspaper companies. They may not have the operating income to cover debt service.

That means a lot of newspapers could be auctioned off later this year.

According to The New York Times, Zell "announced a set of deep cuts, saying that shrinking revenue left them no choice." One of the things that means is fewer pages devoted to news as newsprint use is reduced.

The Tribune carries a lot of debt, so it is in more trouble that other chains such as The New York Times Company (NYSE: NYT) and Gannett (NYSE: GCI). But, other large paper operations including McClatchy NYSE: MNI) and Gatehouse (NYSE: GHS) also have massive debt burdens from money they borrowed to expand their empires.

What all of this means is that more reporters and editors will lose their jobs and the typical reader will get a newspaper that is thin as toilet paper. For newspaper company investors it means that stocks, some already down 50% to 70% in the last year, are going down even further.

The trouble also may spell the end of nearly a century of big papers like The New York Times being the news sources of record. The company recently cut 100 people, most of them from the news operation. Covering major national and international stories is becoming more difficult and at some point it may be impossible.

There is always CNN.

In this weekly column, he'll offer advice to investors who are just getting started.

While lenders and builders have been cruelly battered by a real estate market that seems to have no bottom, there's another industry group that suffers as much if not more: the newspaper business.

First, newspapers were hit by the Internet, taking readers faster than rebate checks are spent. Now it's real estate ads, and their complementary advertisers such as home furnishings. Another weak advertiser: automobiles. All ads have decreased to a point where some publishers are laying off employees every month, trying to cut costs fast enough to offset lower revenues.

Looks pretty awful, doesn't it? Not if you're an investor with a longer term horizon.

Newspapers aren't going away. They are the local web that ties a community together, a source to stay in touch with what's going on as well as a venue for local advertisers to find buyers. Newspaper publishers may shrink more, but they're not disappearing. The community relies too much on them. Furthermore, astute newspaper management isn't publishing and hoping someone will buy their papers. The best ones are going into other media, especially television, radio and the Internet.

Newspapers are evolving. They have to for survival. Just putting out the newspaper every day is a sure way to oblivion as readers get more and more news, ads, and information from other sources. And advertisers are using other media, away from newspapers, to get their goods sold, finding the Internet a powerful resource. It's only natural that newspapers go with the flow, go where the money is.

Costs are another reason for the evolution. Newspaper print costs more, though increases haven't been as strong as you might expect since less of it is being used. Shipping costs (think national dailies like the Wall Street Journal or USAToday) are higher as trucks fill up with expensive fuel. Newspapers are getting squeezed on both sides: lower revenues and higher costs. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

For the moment it is. Many of the newspaper publishers have seen their stocks cascade more than 90% as investors voted with their shares as to how they think the industry will do. They are right for the moment.

But if you believe the economy is going to return to somewhat normal over the next 12 to 18 months, you'll want to spend some time digging into newspaper publishers. Several still have good earnings, even in these difficult times. Some have high dividends, well covered by earnings, that should keep the stock price propped while you wait for better times. All the good ones have Internet connections, either directly or through joint ventures with established sites.

Examples of Web deals: Yahoo! brought several regional dailies online, featuring local content. That boosts the reach of the newspapers and should help sell more ad space. Another one: Monster Worldwide is in collaboration with many newspapers so employers in the local papers have a wider audience for their ads. Another: cars.com has partnered with many dailies to boost its content and in return give local car ads a bigger audience. On the television and radio side, many newspapers bought local stations, broadening the universe for ad revenues.

So the smart ones are surviving. When the economy recovers, and more specifically when real estate and auto industries come back, ad revenues will as well. And the first few months of the recovery will show extraordinary returns as publishers will have lower labor costs as well as lower operating costs (because of Internet and broadcast efficiencies).

When this will happen is the big question. If it takes too long, more damage will be done to balance sheets as losses grow or at best, profits shrink. If no recovery comes (which has never happened in U.S. history), then all stocks are not worth owning. If the recovery comes four or five years down the road, then everybody from the government to corporate leaders has been asleep at the switch. My best guess is that within the next two years, the economy will be chugging along, taking many industries from the depths of despair to strong profitability. One of those industries will be newspaper publishing. It will take patience, but that patience should be well rewarded.

The information makes it more likely that the stocks of smaller paper companies like The McClatchy Company (NYSE: MNI) will take a dive over the next several weeks.

GCI revenues for the period ended May 4, 2008 declined 7.7 % compared with the same period in 2007. Revenue in the big publishing division fell almost 11%. Real estate classifieds fell almost 24% as home sales in most regions fell apart.

According to Gannett "At USA TODAY, advertising revenues were down 6.4%." As odd as it may seem, falling revenue is not the industry's single biggest problem because most companies like Gannett still have good profits. However, falling operating cash flow is killing companies that took on debt over the last decade to buy other newspapers in the hope of building scale and cutting costs. McClatchy has over $2.4 billion in debt after buying rival Knight-Ridder.

Banks may end up owning some of the newspaper chains.

To the dwindling number of investors who still care about the beleaguered sector, this is good news. But shares are barely budging because the overall numbers were dismal.

Net income was $191.8 million, or 84 cents a share, down 9% compared with a profit of $210.6 million, or 90 cents a share, a year earlier. Excluding one-time items, profit would have been 77 cents, a penny better than Wall Street estimates. Newspaper publishing revenue fell 8.6% to $1.51 billion as retail and classified revenue slumped. USA Today revenue rose 2.1% as national advertising held steady. Revenue from its much smaller broadcasting business fell 7% to $170.2 million.

Noble Financial Group research director Michael Kupinski told Bloomberg that ``the economic weakness has really taken its toll on Gannett. Revenues were a little lighter than what we expected and classified was certainly a major part of that.''

Kupinski recommends the purchase of Gannett shares because the company's results should improve. I am not so sure. The sector's prospects may improve slightly but none of these companies have any business being public. About the only reason to buy them is as a bet that they will be taken private.

Gannett, which for years has been one of the few publishers Wall Street, might be attractive to private equity if the fundamentals in the sector improved. But that may be a long time coming.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Topix: Where everyone's a news editor

Every day, about 20,000 local news stories are published in the U.S. Interestingly enough, there are more than 32,000 ZIP codes. Simply put, there are many cities where you won't find any local stories.

Well, with Topix, things are different. The site is categorized by ZIP codes and is chock-full of local stories. More importantly, users can post their own stories and links. In other words, anybody can essentially be an editor.

"A key is allowing the community to do its thing," said Chris Tolles, the CEO of Topix, in an interview with me. "Our site gets about 110,000 comments per day. Keep in mind that the Craigslist gets about 70,000 per day."

In fact, Topix is one of the top 20 online news sites, according to a ComScore report. The firm has media investors like Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI), The McClatchy Company (NYSE: MNI) and Tribune Company.

"People like to talk about their town," said Tolles. "It could mean news about a recent crime or some gossip."

It also helps that Topix has a clean interface. "Easy is important when building a community," said Tolles.

The new operation will have access to funding from the four companies and will cover 120 newspaper websites with a combined 50 million unique users. The new firm will not sell ads in the New York Times and USA Today which already have large online sales forces.

The venture will likely be a failure. By holding out the two most prized newspaper websites and selling smaller papers to advertisers the quadrantOne is likely to do no better than the unit Yahoo! (NASDAQ:YHOO) has set-up to sell newspaper ads. While newspaper websites are attracting more readers as people moves away from print products, ad agencies can already buy inventory from these properties with ease.

The new company may offer "one stop shopping" for online newspaper ad inventory, but it is not inventory that advertisers really want.
